Character: Mary Bryant

Mary Bryant is among the hundreds of convicts transported to Botany Bay with the First Fleet. On the voyage she meets her future husband, Will, as well as attracting the attention of the ship's lieutenant. Impregnated by a prison guard before the ships set sail, Bryant is desperate to gain better conditions than those endured by the other convicts - and is willing to do quite a lot to achieve it.

FILMING
"It was so embarrassing. You're playing a character who's achieved all these amazing things and trying to represent all the challenges of her life and actually just puking over the side of the boat the whole time. There is something about already feeling faint and sick and horrendous that lends the whole thing a kind of realism. I'm not wearing corsets, the costume isn't inhibiting in any way and it's all action from the word go."
