Character: Angel Deverell
When you look through
literature, there's a real lineage of those characters. Becky in Vanity Fair,
Emma in Emma, Gwendolyn in Daniel Deronda - these are all highly ambitious women
whose goals have been challenged into social mobility. Many people think that
Angel is incredibly unattractive with no redeeming features at all, but I never
felt that way. She has these great, abiding flaws, but she's also quite an
impressive character. When you look at the choices she makes - to devote her
life to literature and reject motherhood, to marry for love, to make her own
money - and put them in the context of the era, that's unheard of. -- Romola
Garai (FilmInk, November 2007)
England, 1905 is the setting for Ozon's sweeping epic
that charts the radiant rise and devastating fall of florid romance writer,
Angel Deverell (Romola Garai).
Beautiful, precocious, talented and above all, burningly ambitious for fame,
love and a life far beyond her humble beginnings, Ozon's adaptation of
Elizabeth Taylor's novel bares all the hallmarks of classic Hollywood
productions of the 1930s and 1940s.
With an excellent supporting cast featuring Sam Neill, Charlotte Rampling,
Lucy Russell and Michael Fassbender, Angel is full of drama, subversive
sexuality and humour; an engrossing fantasy, that finds Ozon at the height
of his directorial powers.
